Here's a copy of a post on the East of London Family History Society:
Looking for information about my grandmother’s family:
Violet Abbott, b 01.03.1910 Plaistow, West Ham
Her father: George Abbott b 07.09.1866
Her mother: Ellen Abbott, formerly Monk (according to BC) – no marriage found between any Abbotts or Monks.
George had at least two wives:
Married Harriet Austin 1887 and had Florence, Ellen, Louise, George and Sarah. 1891 census shows George and Harriet, but both are two years older than they should be. Florence and Ellen are shown at correct age. College Street, Hackney.
1901 census shows George is a widower (Ellen and Louise are shown) living at Rippoth Road, Bow. No trace of Sarah, but she reappears in 1911.
1911 census shows George is ‘married’ to ‘Ellen’ and has been for 9 years. Sarah (13), plus Alice, Frederick, Violet (birth certificates give mother’s maiden name as Monk). Living at Napier Road, Stratford.
I have found a marriage between a George Abbott and Ellen Harris 13.09.02 in Bow, London. It is the only marriage registered between a George and an Ellen within the year parameters.
Did Ellen Harris die, were they divorced? Did George have children with three women and not marry the third (my great grandmother)? Or, for some unknown reason, did Ellen register the births with a different maiden name?
My family were aware there were children from two mothers and that the mother’s maiden name was Monk – but that’s it.
